Cousin Fun from Summer 2014

The kids just finished six weeks of an awesome day camp, and I had big plans for projects I was going to catch up on, like this blog and getting 6,000 photos off my phone. That didn’t happen, and now we are getting ready to fly to Utah tomorrow to see most of the Jensen family. Kids are super excited to relive some of the highlights from last summer (that I am just now posting about), like checking out the new children’s museum at Thanksgiving point. Lots of climbing and scary tunnels and rope bridges, but the cousins helped each other out. The girls all have matching pink dresses and Sidon and Max had matching orange polo shirts so we could keep track of them all.

Sophie shared her sno cone with Julie, then Max shared his with Breanne, and Maya shared with Max and Julie. And everyone was happy (and fortunately healthy). Julie talked about it for months.

Sidon, Max and Papa checked out the puppet theater, trains, and a maze (Max loooves mazes).

Julie liked pulling and letting go of pullies & weights with Sophie. And diving into the sandpit. Twice.

The highlight of the trip for certain nieces may have been the discovery of some old dance costumes in the basement and the ensuing dance parties.

We had a fun picnic with the extended family on my dad’s side including an old family tradition, a chicken dinner, where you eat like a chicken. Max played his part well. And we got a Jensen family photo without the kids (much easier).

We are looking forward to more adventures with our family this week. Max still has to be careful not to get kicked in the face (so maybe not climbing through the rain forest at the children’s museum), but can swim and run around and eat everything except really hard foods like nuts & raw veggies. And we’ll try to keep the dance parties under control…

Visiting NYC

It’s about an 8 minute walk to the train station from our house, then under 30 minutes to Grand Central. Brittney found lots of excuses to go back to Manhattan in June, starting with a doctor appointment for Max at NYU. Waiting for the train which is so much nicer/less smelly than the subway.

IMG_0559

The doctor’s office was conveniently located close to fabulous pizza. Max wanted a slice with crab, one of his current favorite foods.

The next day Julie and I were back at Grand Central enjoying NYC treats like overpriced green juice & fancy dark chocolate (btw, the bandaid is for fashion not function).

IMG_0629IMG_0631

We went to a storytime in the MoMA art lab which included a book on Frank Lloyd Wright, building a city with books and blocks, and time to play with her favorite giant mobile.

Guess what her favorite piece in the exhibit was? And she always loves making wishes in the sculpture garden.

The next week we went to storytime in the Discovery Room at The Natural History Museum, where Max put together a dinosaur fossil and Julie dove right in with older boys she didn’t know to dig.

Julie got right in there with the older boys to dig for fossils

The class went to the Hall of Ocean Life where Max was very intent on filling out his worksheet and we met up with one of his best friends from his old school, then to our favorite UWS juice bar where Julie did ‘yoga’ by the free samples.

The next day we caught a jazz concert at the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center. I used to take Max to these all the time but this year it conflicted with his physical therapy schedule. Max and Julie were by far the youngest in the audience and some of the most enthusiastic. Max played along on his invisible guitar. Afterwards we went to say thank you to the musicians and got a private concert form the ‘penano’ player (as Max calls it). Julie requested ‘Happy Birthday’ and she and Max were very entertained when he sang the ‘you look like a monkey…’ verse.

We visited our old apartment and neighbors admired the Central Park/Hudson River view from the balcony one last time. We will miss this vista in the fall but we look forward to watching the giant old trees in our yards change colors.

We’ve had so many amazing experiences in NYC and I hope they continue. Coming in is fairly easy depending on the location and time of day, though it takes about an hour to get to the UWS via public transportation and the kids are going to be busy with school soon (Max 5 days a week 8:45 am – 3:30 pm, Julie 3 days 9-11:45 am). Hoping to get a few more city excursions in before school starts on Sept 10.

July 4th With Grandpa Don

The weekend of July 4th we got special visit from Grandpa Don. We drove around Marmorenck (where he grew up) with him and found the house Mark lived in until age 5.

Mark's old house

At the toy store he bought Max and Julie some books and this watering can which is Julie’s new favorite toy. At the athletic club celebration on July 5th (postponed due to rain on the 4th), Julie spent a long time watering the deck and my feet.

Max loved folding and unfolding his present, a crab beach chair. He took it over to another family with some teen boys playing cards and decided to join them for most of the afternoon. They were very patient and kind with him and even let him fold and unfold their chairs. He made us all stay away except for Grandpa.

Mark and Max stayed up for the late fireworks. The next morning we had lunch with a view at the Lobster House on nearby City Island.

The visit was short but we fit in lots of book readings, some of them on our new glider Grandpa and Mark had a frustrating hour putting together, some on our bed with silly sock gloves.

We had so much fun with Grandpa, come visit again soon! Looking forward to Bubbe and Poppy’s first visit to our house this weekend.

Cousins In The Suburbs

Poor Jeff & Casey had to deal with some flight drama getting to Russia, which meant the kids got extra time for a really long tea party in our backyard. Breanne and Sophie taught us how to say ‘would you like a spot of tea?’

Everyone loved dressing up in Russian costumes from Nonna and Papa (Max calls this his ‘king
costume).

A tired recap of the visit. Certain aspects of Cinderella really stuck with Julie.

Max and Julie were very sad to see their friends go. Every few days I’d take Julie down to the basement where Sophie and Breanne slept and she would get excited and say ‘my cousins?’ hoping they were hiding out there. Fortunately we got to visit them in Utah just a few weeks later – photos from that fun-filled trip coming soon.

Cousins in the City

Brittney’s brother Jeff broke in our guest room with his wife and two oldest kids on the way to visit Nonna & Papa in Russia. We had fun sharing our favorite NYC foods with them and riding the train into Manhattan.

We took them to the Museum of Modern Art, where we had gelato (not ice cream, as Mr. foodie Max pointed out) in the sculpture garden, played in the Movement Art Lab, and showed them some of our favorite paintings.

First Broadway show for the girls. Julie was supposed to be napping and was devastated when everyone went in without her, saying ‘I am not too little!’ over and over. I ended up taking her into the second half, and she was a pretty good audience member, just a little too much commentary on how the show (Cinderella) was just like a Minnie Mouse book we have.

Pizza! They brought the kids dough to play with and make monkeys out of.

IMG_0336IMG_0339

The highlight of our cultural experiences was probably the M & M store, though Julie was scared of the giant one (even after her cousins demonstrated they could knock it over with hugs). Now when we see big animals at the zoo etc. and she says they are too scary she always adds ‘like the green one’)
