Highlights of his life so far:

Around 9pm on Tuesday, September 15th, Brittney started feeling a little crampy. At midnight she was having contractions about every five minutes. Around 2:30 am we went to the hospital, where the doctors confirmed she was in early labor (2 cm dilated) and sent her home to try to relax until she was in active labor.

9 am Wednesday morning the contractions were about every 3 minutes. The lobby of our building is being renovated, and on this day they were working on the elevators, so all the residents had to use the two service elevators. Brittney had 3 contractions while waiting for the elevator, which was very crowded when it finally came. Mark asked everyone to make room for a woman in labor, but they either didn’t believe us or didn’t care. The elevator stopped at each floor and more people kept crowding in. One woman wanted us to wait while she chased after her dog that had ran away. Mark didn’t let that happen.

We finally made it to the hospital (fortunately a two minute cab ride). At 9:30 am Brittney was 5 cm dilated and in active labor. At 3:36, after no complications, we had a beautiful hairy baby boy.

Mom and baby were recovering well and getting ready to go home Friday morning, when Max decided to honor his California and Florida roots by getting jaundice so he could hang out in a tanning bed and get some light therapy. His weight had also gone down to 5 lbs 8 ounces, so he spent the next three days in the hospital, with his devoted daddy pulling some all-nighters to keep him company.

Monday morning he was back up to 5 lbs 10 ounces and no longer yellow, so we finally got to take him home. Mark’s mom Gina has been here since Wednesday keeping us well fed and helping us figure out what we’re doing. Max is eating well, gaining weight steadily, and getting more alert and adorable each day.

Shlomo’s Friends

saying hello... We have been keeping this shower souvenir in our nursery. One morning he was peeking out to say hello. After Brittney ate breakfast, she went to her computer where the bear had moved to wait for her. He must be getting lonely waiting for the baby. Mark thinks we will go into labor when the balloon is deflated all the way. We are getting pretty close; his paws are brushing the ground.
We got some cute animal stickers for the nursery to keep the bear company.

Almost 39 weeks! (September 13)
Almost 39 weeks! (September 13)
Thanks to many meals out with Mark and friends and lots of gelato and chocolate, the baby and belly keep growing. Though certain tasks, like putting on shoes and getting out of chairs, get harder every day, Brittney is still active and feeling okay most of the time. We are officially due a week from today (September 22nd). As of last Tuesday Brittney was 1 cm dilated, which means the baby could be coming now…or not for a few weeks. Mark wouldn’t mind one more Saturday of uninterrupted college football after Michigan’s incredible win over the evil empire last weekend, and Brittney has some work to wrap up and some social and cultural events planned, but if the baby wants to come now we are ready to welcome him or her to our family.

Almost ready…

We went to the OB on Thursday and got a sonogram showing that the baby’s head is facing down and has dropped pretty low, so he or she could be coming any day now…or not for another few weeks. The doctor thought Brittney looked small still so she went to the hospital for a more detailed sonogram on Friday and learned that baby is 6 pounds, within normal range but a little low (22nd percentile). So she has been eating lots of yummy food to try to fatten the baby up a bit. Friday night we went out for an Ethiopian meal, followed by Japanese cupcakes and Italian gelato at an outdoor HD opera broadcast. This weekend we also got massages, had a fancy lunch at Jean-Georges, and watched some (or maybe a lot of) college football.

Mark has been getting ready to be a dad by assembling items for the nursery and strollers. Here are two photos of the baby’s room; there are more at http://picasaweb.google.com/brittneyajensen/BabyNursery. We think we have everything we need for at least the first few weeks. Now we are just waiting to welcome Shlomo/Shlomette (we looked away during parts of the sonogram and still don’t know the gender).

Shlomo meets Rocky

At 37 weeks, we are just about ready to welcome Shlomo/Shlomette to our family. Thanks to the generosity of family and friends, we think we have everything we need for the baby’s arrival. We have set up the nursery, taken a childbirth class, and even packed our bag for the hospital. Last weekend we tried to enjoy our remaining couple time together with some special dates. We looked at art at Christie’s and the Museum of Modern Art, went out to a fancy Italian dinner downtown, shopped at the Barney’s Warehouse Sale, and got free tickets to see Euripides’ The Bacchus in Central Park, where we had some adventure with our culture.

Before the play, we ate some sandwiches at our seats in the outdoor arena, enjoying the perfect weather. We put our leftovers in a cardboard carton on the ground. About twenty minutes into the play, Brittney thought she felt something furry against her leg. She looked down and saw the dinner remains were shaking back and forth. A little scared, she asked Mark to investigate. He told her it was a kitten, but it was actually hungry raccoon. Mark scooted the food to the aisle and the raccoon followed. Another raccoon came to try to claim some, but the first fought him away. We were a little freaked out but tried to keep watching the play (which was rather odd). Then the raccoons came back toward our seat, so we moved a few rows up. But they kept following us. Not wanting to expose our baby to rabies, we got up to leave. On the way out, an usher offered us seats in the second row, so we took those, thinking we were safe. At the play’s most dramatic, tragic, moment, there was a scream from the center of the crowd – the raccoons were back. Mark noticed one coming toward our row, so we took off — we didn’t want to get bit, and it was pretty clear by this point that things weren’t going well for the people of Thebes.

Other than that wildlife scare, our final weeks are going smoothly. Mark is getting over strep throat and slanderous but unfounded rumors about the Michigan football team, but Brittney is healthy and active and the belly and baby continue to grow…

NYC Shower

Brittney had a lovely shower last week at Rachel’s, a restaurant in the theater district. Friends and family helped her get ready to welcome our newest family member. More photos
