On a cold wet day we headed to the local mall (the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle). This being a New York City mall, it has a display of Salvador Dali sculptures. |
Max really wanted to touch the famous melting clock, but since the sculptures are on sale for more than $50,000 we kept them just out of reach. |
This mall is also home to Jazz at Lincoln Center, which had an interesting music installation where 40 speakers in a room each play a different vocal part of a 16th century choral piece. We listened to the parts individually and hung out on benches in the middle of the room to hear all the harmonies. |
Some of the deep voices were a little scary. |
In our mom/baby dance classes, Max impressed us with some creative movement on the floor and enthusiastic maracas shaking. |
But sometimes Max has enough of this artsy stuff and just wants to play on the swings and slides in the park. |
Or read a book with his Aunt Karen, in town briefly for a conference (or try to play with her glasses). |
There are so many cool kid-friendly events in NYC that Brittney started a blog to share with them with our friends and neighbors. Check out Kid On The Town.

A Fun Fall Day
Yesterday we were on our way to a stroller workout class in Central Park when we saw the Metropolitan Museum of Art beckoning, so we decided to ditch the class and have a fun day looking at art and playing in the park. |
First we hit the playground. Max’s favorite part of the swings is hanging on to the chains. |
After eating some lunch outside (Max enjoys watching older kids run around), we went to an exhibit of a Vienna Imperial Silver Service. Max liked all the shiny silver, and kept trying to put his finger on the glass. |
We also looked at some beautiful impressionist paintings. The colors made Max smile. |
The park was so gorgeous and Max looked so handsome in his matching dinosaur shirt and shoes that Brittney made him stop every few minutes for a photo shoot. He was a very obliging model, though he liked to stare at anyone walking by. |
It is much easier to pose him than it was last fall when he could barely hold his head up. He can even stand with the help of a fence. |
On the way home we went by the Natural History Museum to sign up for an annual membership so he can go with his dad this weekend. After his nap, we went down to the Kidville playspace, then Britney and Max shared a messy pasta dinner while Mark was out for work. He was playing peek-a-boo with his bib, but when Brittney got the camera out to record it, he stopped and just acted a little silly. Video of Max hanging in the high chair |
Max has been enjoying watching the trees change colors through our window. He likes to point to the trees, getting nice finger smudges on the glass. |
Brittney is off to Stanford this weekend to dance with her old cohorts, so Max and Mark will be having special Daddy/Son time. She is excited to travel unfettered and see her friends, but she will miss her adorable baby during her first trip away from him. |

Maryland
A few weekends ago we left the hot, crowded city to visit Mark’s college roommate Bob and his family, who recently left Washington DC for remote lakeside Maryland. |
Max made friends with Bob and Lori’s 2-year old daughter Sofie, who along with her parents, was an amazing hostess. |
Max enjoyed watching Sofie and her cousins dance and run around. He played dress-up with them in their basement playroom and tried to learn the alphabet from this smart little girl. |
Bob is very good at peek-a-boo . |
Max was fascinated by the high ceilings and big staircase in our spacious accomodations, but his favorite feature of the place was the outdoor pool. |
The nearest grocery store was a half hour away, so for Saturday night we caught crabs off the dock in the backyard. |
Before catching the train back to NYC, we visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C, where Sofie gave Max lots of goodbye kisses. |
